A detailed topographical drawing by Eugene von Guerard, capturing the expansive, rugged terrain of the Wannon River source in the Victorian Grampians.
Eugene von Guerard, an Austrian-born artist who spent much of his career in Australia, produced this work during his travels through the Victorian countryside. The drawing depicts the source of the Wannon River, capturing the expansive, rugged terrain of the Grampians region. Von Guerard was known for his precise, scientific approach to topography, which he combined with the atmospheric sensibilities of the Romantic tradition.
The composition employs a wide, panoramic perspective that draws the eye from the immediate foreground, where rocky outcrops and sparse trees provide a sense of scale, across the valley floor towards the distant, jagged peaks. The use of wash allows for subtle gradations of tone, effectively rendering the hazy, sun-drenched quality of the Australian light. Small figures are visible in the lower left, providing a human element that emphasises the vastness of the natural environment.
This work reflects the artist's interest in documenting the physical characteristics of the Australian continent. His training in the Düsseldorf school is evident in the careful attention to geological detail and the structured arrangement of the scene. The drawing serves as a record of the colonial exploration period, offering a view of the terrain as it appeared to European settlers in the mid-nineteenth century. The muted palette and fine line work demonstrate the artist's technical proficiency in capturing the unique textures of the bush, from the gnarled branches of the eucalyptus trees to the weathered surfaces of the stone formations. It remains a representative example of the topographical art produced during this era, balancing empirical observation with a sense of atmospheric depth.
