A delicate woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu from his series Seven Komachi in Fashionable Disguise, depicting figures in a serene Edo-period setting.
This woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu belongs to the series Seven Komachi in Fashionable Disguise, a collection that reimagines the life of the ninth-century poet Ono no Komachi within the contemporary setting of the Edo period. Harunobu is credited with the development of nishiki-e, or brocade prints, which allowed for the use of multiple colours in a single composition. This technical advancement is evident in the subtle, muted tones of the figures' robes and the architectural elements.
The scene depicts two figures in an interior space. One figure sits on a wooden veranda, holding a brush and paper, while the other stands nearby. The composition uses a cloud-like graphic device to frame a secondary image, a common convention in Japanese prints of this era to suggest a dream, a memory, or a thematic connection to the classical subject matter. The architectural lines of the veranda and the bamboo screen provide a structured, geometric contrast to the fluid, graceful lines of the figures' garments. Harunobu's work is characterised by the slender, doll-like proportions of his subjects, which became a hallmark of his style during the 1760s.
As a master of the Ukiyo-e tradition, Harunobu focused on the fleeting nature of everyday life. By transposing the legendary poet Komachi into a domestic scene, he invites the viewer to find beauty in the mundane. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to balance negative space with decorative detail, creating a sense of calm and poise. The inclusion of the small inset image provides a narrative layer, linking the contemporary scene to the historical figure of Komachi, who was often associated with the theme of the sotoba, or wooden grave marker, in traditional Noh theatre.
