A 1922 lithograph by Wassily Kandinsky, featuring a dynamic arrangement of geometric forms and patterns from his Small Worlds portfolio.
Small Worlds IV is a lithograph from the 1922 portfolio titled Kleine Welten (Small Worlds). Produced during his tenure at the Bauhaus in Weimar, this work demonstrates the artist's systematic approach to geometric abstraction. Kandinsky sought to establish a visual language where individual elements, such as lines, circles, and chequered patterns, function as autonomous units within a balanced composition.
The print features a central circular motif that acts as a container for various disparate shapes. A bold, diagonal band of colour cuts across the frame, providing a sense of kinetic energy. The artist employs a variety of textures, including stippled dots, solid blocks of colour, and rhythmic, wavy lines. These elements interact without relying on representational subject matter, focusing instead on the relationship between form and space.
Kandinsky was interested in the psychological effects of colour and geometry. In this print, the interplay of ochre, teal, and black creates a structured yet dynamic visual experience. The use of a chequered pattern adds a tactile quality to the composition, contrasting with the smooth, flat areas of colour. The work reflects the artist's broader theoretical investigations into the spiritual and emotional potential of non-objective art. By isolating these forms, he invites the viewer to observe the tension and harmony between simple geometric components. This print remains a clear example of the formal rigour applied to printmaking during the early twentieth century, maintaining a precise balance between chaotic movement and ordered arrangement.
