A serene genre painting by Alexey Venetsianov, depicting a young Russian peasant boy resting peacefully against a birch tree in a rural setting.
Alexey Venetsianov, a central figure in the development of Russian genre painting, produced this work during a period when he turned his attention away from the imperial court to focus on the lives of the peasantry. The painting depicts a young boy resting against the trunk of a birch tree, his posture suggesting a moment of quiet respite amidst his daily duties. The composition is balanced, with the sleeping figure occupying the foreground, while the expansive, flat Russian countryside stretches out behind him.
Venetsianov employed a clear, naturalistic approach to capture the light and atmosphere of the rural environment. The palette is dominated by soft greens, earthy tones, and the pale blue of a summer sky. The boy wears traditional peasant attire, including a simple linen shirt and lapti (bast shoes), which were characteristic of the rural population at the time. In the distance, a small wooden structure and a solitary figure provide a sense of scale and context to the vast, open space.
This work reflects the artist's interest in the daily existence of the Russian village. Unlike the idealised depictions common in academic art of the era, Venetsianov sought to observe and record the reality of his surroundings with precision. The stillness of the scene, combined with the soft, diffused light, creates a contemplative mood. The painting remains a notable example of the artist's ability to elevate a simple, everyday subject through careful observation and technical skill. It is held in the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, where it is recognised for its contribution to the documentation of 19th-century Russian life.
