A narrative painting by John Collier depicting the classic fairy-tale scene of the Sleeping Beauty, rendered with period-accurate detail and atmosphere.
John Collier, a prominent British painter of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, produced this depiction of the Sleeping Beauty legend in 1921. The composition draws upon the aesthetic traditions of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, favouring a literary subject rendered with meticulous attention to period detail and costume.
The central figure lies in a state of suspended animation upon a carved wooden bed, her long hair cascading across the pillows. She wears a gown decorated with floral motifs, a choice that reflects the artist's interest in historical textile design. Two attendants are positioned in the foreground, one dressed in a deep red gown and the other in blue, both captured in postures of quiet mourning or exhaustion. The setting is a stone-walled chamber, illuminated by light filtering through leaded glass windows. These windows feature small heraldic roundels, which provide a sense of architectural context to the scene.
Collier was known for his technical precision and his ability to construct narrative scenes that felt grounded in reality despite their fairy-tale origins. The floor is composed of a black and white chequered pattern, which helps to establish the spatial depth of the room. The heavy drapery to the left and the cushions on the floor add texture to the interior. This work demonstrates the artist's skill in balancing the stillness of the figures with the decorative elements of the environment. The painting remains a clear example of the late-stage academic style in Britain, where classical training met the romanticised themes of folklore and mythology. The focus remains on the psychological stillness of the subjects, rather than the dramatic action of the narrative, creating a contemplative atmosphere that invites the viewer to observe the details of the clothing, the architecture, and the expressions of the figures.
