A delicate etching by Dutch artist Wouter Johannes van Troostwijk, capturing a dog in a state of quiet repose with precise, observational line work.
Wouter Johannes van Troostwijk was a Dutch painter and etcher whose career was cut short by his premature death at the age of twenty-eight. Despite his brief life, he produced a body of work that demonstrates a keen eye for natural observation and technical precision. This etching, titled Slapende hond, captures a quiet, domestic moment with remarkable economy of line. The artist focuses on the form of the resting animal, using varied hatching to suggest the texture of the fur and the weight of the dog as it lies curled upon the ground.
The composition is modest, avoiding unnecessary background detail to keep the viewer's attention fixed on the subject. Van Troostwijk employs a delicate etching technique, where the density of the lines creates subtle shifts in shadow and volume. The dog is depicted in a state of complete repose, its head tucked and limbs drawn in, conveying a sense of stillness. Such studies were common practice for artists of the period, who often turned to their immediate surroundings for subject matter. This work reflects the broader interest in naturalism that characterised Dutch art at the turn of the nineteenth century, moving away from the highly stylised compositions of earlier eras toward a more direct, observational approach.
At Solis Prints, we offer this museum-grade reproduction to preserve the fine details of the original etching. The print captures the nuances of the artist's mark-making, from the light, sparse lines defining the ground to the denser, more deliberate strokes that define the dog's anatomy. It is a piece that rewards close inspection, revealing the artist's ability to imbue a simple subject with a sense of presence and character. This print is suitable for those who appreciate the technical discipline of historical printmaking and the quiet beauty of animal studies.
