A detailed lithograph by James Duffield Harding depicting the dramatic Falls of Terni, capturing the atmospheric power of the Italian waterfall.
James Duffield Harding was a prominent British watercolourist and lithographer, known for his technical mastery in depicting natural forms. This print, taken from his publication 'Sketches at Home and Abroad', captures the dramatic Cascata delle Marmore, or the Falls of Terni, in Italy. The composition utilises the verticality of the gorge to emphasise the scale of the water as it descends through the rocky terrain.
Harding employs a sophisticated range of tonal values to suggest the atmospheric conditions of the site. The foreground features a fallen tree and rugged vegetation, rendered with precise, calligraphic lines that provide a sense of texture. As the eye moves towards the centre of the image, the lines become softer and more diffuse, effectively conveying the mist and spray generated by the waterfall. The inclusion of a small structure perched atop the cliff provides a sense of human scale against the overwhelming power of the natural environment.
This work reflects the nineteenth-century fascination with the sublime, a concept that sought to evoke awe through the depiction of untamed nature. Harding was highly regarded for his ability to translate the fluidity of watercolour into the medium of lithography, a skill that allowed his work to reach a wider audience through printed volumes. The print demonstrates his methodical approach to drawing, where every mark serves to define the structure of the rocks or the movement of the water. It remains a clear example of the topographical tradition that flourished during the Victorian era, documenting European sites for those who could not travel themselves. The monochromatic palette focuses the viewer on the interplay of light and shadow, highlighting the artist's command over his chosen medium.
