The group includes Dante Alighieri, Petrarch, Giovanni Boccaccio, Cino da Pistoia, Guittone d'Arezzo, and Alamanno Cavalcanti. These men are arranged in a tight, conversational grouping that emphasises their shared intellectual pursuits.

Vasari employs the stylistic hallmarks of the Mannerist period here. The figures exhibit elongated proportions and a sense of artificiality in their poses. The colour palette is dominated by saturated tones, particularly the striking pink of the central figure's robe and the deep reds of the caps worn by the poets.
