A refined surimono woodblock print by Yashima Gakutei, depicting a gathering of scholars in a garden setting with accompanying calligraphy.
This print is a fine example of surimono, a genre of privately commissioned woodblock prints popular among the literati in Edo-period Japan. Yashima Gakutei, a pupil of Katsushika Hokusai, was a master of this format. Surimono were typically produced for special occasions, such as New Year celebrations or poetry gatherings, and were distributed among friends and members of poetry clubs. They are characterised by their high production quality, often incorporating metallic pigments, embossing, and fine paper.
The composition depicts the Six Superior Men of Reiraka, a group of scholars or poets gathered in a garden setting. The figures are arranged in a relaxed, informal manner, engaged in conversation or contemplation. The artist employs a delicate line quality to define the robes and facial features, while the background is suggested through subtle, stippled foliage patterns. The inclusion of calligraphy, which weaves through the upper portion of the print, is a standard feature of surimono, linking the visual imagery to the specific literary themes of the gathering.
Gakutei was known for his ability to integrate complex literary references into his designs. The figures here represent an idealised vision of scholarly life, reflecting the values of the educated elite of the time. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted blues, greens, and earthy tones, which allows the viewer to focus on the interaction between the figures and the surrounding text. This print provides a glimpse into the refined aesthetic culture of the early nineteenth century, where art and poetry were inextricably linked in the social lives of the Japanese literati. The work remains a clear representation of the technical skill and intellectual depth associated with the surimono tradition.
