Description

A refined Rinpa school painting depicting a nobleman crossing a river, characterised by elegant lines and a balanced, decorative composition.

This work by Sakai Ōho depicts a scene from the classical Japanese theme of the Six Jewel Rivers (Mutamagawa). The Rinpa school, to which Ōho belonged, often revisited literary and poetic subjects, reinterpreting them through a refined, decorative lens. Ōho was a student of Sakai Hōitsu, and his work maintains the stylistic hallmarks of the school: a focus on clear, elegant lines and a balanced use of colour that avoids excessive ornamentation.

The composition features a nobleman on horseback, accompanied by attendants, crossing a river. The water is rendered with stylised, circular ripples, a common convention in Japanese painting to suggest movement and depth. Small yellow flowers dot the foreground, providing a contrast to the deep blue of the water. The background is kept minimal, with soft, muted tones suggesting distant hills, which allows the figures to remain the primary focus of the viewer's attention.

Sakai Ōho’s approach to this subject demonstrates the technical precision expected of a professional painter during the late Edo period. The figures are dressed in traditional court attire, rendered with attention to pattern and texture. The horse, with its spotted coat, is depicted with a degree of naturalism that balances the more decorative elements of the river and the surrounding flora. This print captures the quiet, meditative quality often associated with the Rinpa tradition, where the subject matter is drawn from classical poetry and historical narrative. The use of space and the deliberate placement of the figures create a sense of stillness, inviting the viewer to observe the scene as a moment frozen in time. It is a representative example of the aesthetic values held by the Rinpa school, prioritising harmony and visual clarity.
