A geometric abstract painting by Theo van Doesburg, 'Simultaneous Counter Composition' showcases the De Stijl movement's principles through primary colours, black lines, and dynamic rectangular forms.
Theo van Doesburg, born Christiaan Emil Marie Küpper, was a Dutch artist, architect, and theorist. He is best known as a founder and leading figure of De Stijl (The Style), an artistic movement advocating pure abstraction and universality through a reduction to the essentials of form and colour; he was also a proponent of Constructivism. Van Doesburg sought a total work of art that integrated painting, sculpture, architecture, and design. 'Simultaneous Counter Composition' exemplifies Van Doesburg's exploration of geometric abstraction and his commitment to the principles of De Stijl. The painting features a dynamic arrangement of coloured rectangles and lines, creating a sense of balance and tension. The composition is characterised by its use of primary colours (red, yellow, and blue), along with black and white, reflecting the movement's emphasis on elemental forms and colours. The intersecting black lines add structure to the composition, while the tilted angles of the rectangles introduce a sense of movement and dynamism. This work demonstrates Van Doesburg's attempt to create a universal visual language through abstraction.
