An exquisite 18th-century etching by Gabriel Huquier, depicting a lavish Rococo table centrepiece and tureens designed by Juste-Aurèle Meissonier.
This etching, executed by Gabriel Huquier after the designs of Juste-Aurèle Meissonier, captures the height of the French Rococo style. The composition presents a grand table centrepiece flanked by two ornate tureens, commissioned for the Duke of Kingston. The design exhibits the characteristic asymmetry and fluid, organic forms that defined the period, with shell-like motifs, scrolling foliage, and sculptural figures of putti integrated into the metalwork.
Meissonier was a leading figure in the development of the Rococo aesthetic, and his work often pushed the boundaries of traditional silversmithing. The central piece features a complex arrangement of decorative elements that appear to grow from the base, blurring the line between functional object and fine sculpture. Huquier, a prolific printmaker and publisher, was instrumental in disseminating these designs across Europe. His precise line work captures the reflective quality of silver and the depth of the relief, providing a clear record of the elaborate craftsmanship required for such commissions.
The background, featuring panelled walls with further decorative carvings, provides a sense of the domestic environment for which these objects were intended. This print serves as a record of the high-status commissions that defined the eighteenth-century decorative arts. It offers a glimpse into the collaborative process between designer, silversmith, and printmaker, documenting a specific moment in the history of European luxury goods.
