A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga, featuring a silver pheasant perched among peach branches.
This woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga depicts a silver pheasant, or hakkan, perched amidst branches laden with peaches. As a practitioner of the early Ukiyo-e school, Shigenaga was instrumental in the development of the kacho-ga genre, which focuses on birds and flowers. The composition balances the avian subject with the rounded forms of the fruit, creating a harmonious arrangement typical of mid-eighteenth-century Japanese printmaking.
The print exhibits the characteristic hand-coloured aesthetic of the period. The lines are precise and calligraphic, defining the texture of the pheasant's plumage and the rugged bark of the peach tree. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft yellows, muted oranges, and dark ink tones to convey the natural subject matter. The cartouche in the upper right corner provides the title, a common feature in prints intended for educational or decorative series.
Shigenaga operated in Edo during a period of technical transition. His work often shows a clear focus on clarity and decorative balance rather than atmospheric perspective. The flat composition allows the viewer to appreciate the graphic quality of the bird and the fruit. This print reflects the aesthetic values of the time, where nature was observed through a lens of stylised elegance. The work is a representative example of the early print culture in Japan, where artists sought to capture the essence of the natural world through the medium of woodblock printing. The paper tone, aged to a warm beige, adds to the historical character of the piece, making it a fine example of the kacho-ga tradition.
