Pyotr Konchalovsky, a founding member of the Jack of Diamonds group, produced this view of Siena during a period of intense engagement with the structural principles of Paul Cézanne. The composition rejects traditional atmospheric perspective in favour of a constructed, architectural approach to the canvas. The buildings are rendered as distinct, geometric volumes, their forms defined by bold, deliberate brushwork and a clear separation of planes. The palette is dominated by a deep, saturated blue that occupies the upper third of the frame, creating a stark contrast with the warm, earthy tones of the terracotta roofs and the pale, sun-bleached walls of the structures below.
