A delicate woodblock print by Uematsu Tōshū featuring a shrimp and an udo plant, rendered with precise lines and a muted, naturalistic palette.
This woodblock print by Uematsu Tōshū belongs to the kacho-ga tradition, which focuses on the depiction of birds, flowers, and other natural subjects. The composition presents a shrimp resting alongside a stalk of udo, a plant native to East Asia. The artist employs a restrained palette, using soft earth tones and muted greys to render the textures of the crustacean and the botanical specimen. The lines are precise and delicate, reflecting the technical skill required for traditional Japanese woodblock printing during the Meiji period.
The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper portion of the print provides a poetic context, a common feature in Japanese art where text and image share the pictorial space. The arrangement is balanced, with the shrimp positioned horizontally across the lower half of the frame, its long antennae extending towards the left. The udo plant provides a simple, organic counterpoint to the more complex anatomy of the shrimp. The paper texture remains visible, adding a tactile quality to the print. This work demonstrates the observational approach favoured by artists of the era, who sought to capture the specific characteristics of their subjects with clarity and economy of form. The print is an example of the refined aesthetic sensibilities prevalent in late nineteenth-century Japanese graphic arts, where the focus remains on the quiet observation of the natural world.
