A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, depicting travellers caught in a sudden rainstorm along the Tokaido road.
This woodblock print is one of the most recognised images from Utagawa Hiroshige's series, The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido. It depicts a group of travellers caught in a sudden downpour near the post station of Shono. The composition relies on the diagonal lines of the rain, which cut across the scene to create a sense of urgent movement. The figures are shown in various states of haste, leaning into the wind as they navigate the steep path.
Hiroshige employs a limited palette to convey the atmospheric conditions of the storm. The grey washes suggest the density of the rain, while the silhouettes of the bamboo grove bend under the pressure of the weather. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to capture transient meteorological effects through the medium of woodblock printing. The publisher, Takenouchi Magohachi, also known as Hoeido, was responsible for the production of this series, which brought Hiroshige widespread recognition.
The work is a classic example of the ukiyo-e tradition, where the focus shifts from the depiction of urban life to the observation of nature and travel. The technical execution involves multiple blocks to achieve the subtle gradations of tone, particularly in the sky and the rain-streaked background. By focusing on the physical struggle of the travellers against the elements, the artist provides a narrative quality to the scene. This print remains a primary example of how Japanese printmakers utilised line and negative space to represent complex environmental phenomena.
