This woodblock print is part of the celebrated series, Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, published by Hoeido. Utagawa Hiroshige captures the journey between Edo and Kyoto, focusing here on Shirasuka, the thirty-second station. The composition employs a framing technique, using pine trees on the left and right to guide the viewer's eye toward the expansive view of the sea below.

Travellers are depicted descending the Shiomi Slope, their conical hats providing a rhythmic visual element against the green incline. The sea, rendered in a gradient of blue, stretches toward the horizon, where the sky transitions from a soft peach to a pale cream. Small boats dot the water, adding a sense of scale to the coastal scene. Hiroshige uses the bokashi technique, a method of manual colour gradation on the woodblock, to achieve the subtle atmospheric effects in the sky and water.

The print demonstrates the artist's ability to balance human activity with the natural environment. The travellers are small figures, subordinate to the vastness of the coastal geography.
