A classic woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting travellers at Shirasuka station. This scene captures the first view of the Pacific Ocean from the Tōkaidō road.
This woodblock print belongs to the Hoeidō edition of The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō. It depicts Shirasuka, the thirty-third station on the coastal route between Edo and Kyoto. The composition focuses on the view from Shiomi-zaka, or Salt-view Slope. This location was noted for providing travellers with their first sight of the Pacific Ocean when journeying from the east. Hiroshige uses large, dark pine trees to frame the left side of the image. Their twisted trunks and dense needles create a strong vertical element against the horizontal expanse of the sea. A winding path leads the eye from the foreground down towards the coast. Several travellers appear on this road. One figure carries a heavy load on a pole, while another walks with a staff and a wide straw hat. In the lower centre, a simple yellow-roofed shelter provides a resting place for weary pedestrians. The sea is a pale blue plane dotted with the white sails of distant ships. These vessels are rendered as minimalist white rectangles on the horizon. A band of orange light stretches across the sky where the water meets the air. This use of colour gradation, known as bokashi, adds a sense of atmosphere to the scene without relying on complex shading. The transition from the warm orange at the horizon to the pale cream of the upper sky suggests the light of early morning. The print contains several inscriptions. The red cartouche at the top right identifies the series title. Next to it, the station name Shirasuka is written in bold characters. A short poem or descriptive text is also included in the upper section of the sky. This work demonstrates Hiroshige's ability to combine topographical accuracy with a calm, observational style. It remains one of the most recognisable designs from his most famous series.
