Alfred Wallis's 'Shipwreck 2, the Wreck of the 'Alba'' captures a maritime disaster in his distinctive naive style. Painted on board with simplified forms and muted colours, the artwork reflects Wallis's memories of a life at sea.
Alfred Wallis, a Cornish fisherman and self-taught artist, began painting in his seventies after the death of his wife. His art is characterised by a naive style, reflecting his memories of a life at sea. Wallis often painted on found materials, such as cardboard and wood, using ship paint. His unique perspective and direct approach gained recognition from artists Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood, who encountered him during a visit to St Ives in 1928. They were struck by his originality and became early champions of his work. 'Shipwreck 2, the Wreck of the 'Alba' depicts a maritime disaster. The painting shows a large ship, the 'Alba', caught in tumultuous waves, with another vessel capsized in the distance. Wallis's distinctive style is evident in the simplified forms and flattened perspective, which create a sense of immediacy and raw emotion. The colours are muted, dominated by greys, whites, and blues, reflecting the harshness of the sea. A patch of yellow in the foreground adds an unexpected element to the composition.
