Description
Shinglehead on the Essex Blackwater shore looks across saltmarsh and tidal water, where a wartime pillbox gives the low coastal grassland a small but striking historic marker.
At Tollesbury Wick in Essex, Shinglehead Point lies on a seawall walk through coastal marshes. A wartime pillbox marks the point, while nearby shingle and saltmarsh provide habitat within the Blackwater Estuary, linking the exposed shoreline with both military history and wildlife.
The low concrete structure occupies the right foreground, its narrow opening dark beneath a flat roof. Golden grasses lead across shallow channels towards lilac water and a distant line of houses. Two small sails sit below church-like towers on the horizon. Peach light fills the sky and catches the pillbox wall, suggesting a warm late-summer evening across the level marsh.
