A 1517 engraving by Domenico Campagnola depicting a shepherd and an elderly warrior in a pastoral setting, showcasing the artist's early mastery of line and form.
Domenico Campagnola, a Venetian artist active during the sixteenth century, produced this engraving in 1517. The composition features two figures positioned beside a large tree, which serves as a vertical anchor for the scene. On the left, an elderly man dressed in partial armour leans against the trunk, while a younger shepherd stands to the right, his gaze directed away from his companion. A dog rests near the base of the tree, adding a sense of quietude to the interaction.
The background reveals a simplified architectural structure and a rolling, open terrain, characteristic of the Venetian printmaking tradition of the period. Campagnola employs a variety of hatching techniques to define the forms, creating texture in the bark of the tree, the metallic surfaces of the warrior's gear, and the folds of the shepherd's clothing. The lines are precise, demonstrating the technical control required for early metalplate engraving.
This work reflects the interest in pastoral themes common among artists in the circle of Titian and Giorgione. The contrast between the youth of the shepherd and the aged, battle-worn appearance of the warrior suggests a narrative of experience and innocence. The print is signed with the artist's initials, DO. CAP., in the lower right corner, confirming its attribution to Campagnola during his early career. The overall composition balances the figures against the natural elements, maintaining a focus on the human form within a rural setting. This print offers a clear example of the graphic style prevalent in Northern Italy during the early Renaissance, where the focus remained on clarity of form and the rhythmic application of line to suggest volume and light.
