A graphic illustration for the letter 'Z' from Heorhiy Narbut's 1917 Ukrainian Alphabet, featuring a winter night scene and decorative typography.
Heorhiy Narbut was a central figure in the development of Ukrainian graphic design during the early twentieth century. This work, representing the letter 'Z' from his celebrated 'Ukrainian Alphabet' series, demonstrates his mastery of silhouette and decorative composition. The illustration depicts a winter scene at night, featuring a traditional wooden bell tower, a snow-laden tree, and a hare running across the foreground. The stark contrast between the dark, ink-heavy sky and the white snow creates a clear, graphic quality typical of Narbut's approach to book illustration.
Narbut drew inspiration from historical Ukrainian engravings, baroque motifs, and folk art, blending these elements into a distinct, modern visual language. The composition is divided into two sections: the upper portion contains the narrative illustration, while the lower portion presents the letter 'Z' in both a decorative, floral-adorned script and a bold, minimalist typeface. The text includes words beginning with the letter: 'Zima' (winter), 'zirky' (stars), and 'zaets' (hare). This integration of typography and imagery reflects the artist's focus on the book as a unified aesthetic object. His work remains a primary example of how national identity was articulated through visual culture during a period of political transition in Ukraine. The precision of his line work and the balance of his page layouts continue to inform contemporary graphic design practices.
