A woodblock print by Katsukawa Shun'ei depicting a performer in the Shakkyō dance, originally designed as a template for fabric collage.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shun'ei depicts a performer engaged in the Shakkyō dance, a classic subject derived from the Noh theatre repertoire. The Shakkyō, or Stone Bridge, dance involves a lion spirit playing with peonies, a motif reflected here in the floral headpiece and the stem held by the figure. Shun'ei, a student of Katsukawa Shunshō, was known for his focus on actor portraits, often capturing the intensity of the kabuki stage.
The print belongs to the Oshi-e-gata series, which translates to patterns for collage pictures. These prints were designed to be cut out and mounted onto padded fabric, creating three-dimensional figures. This functional purpose explains the clear outlines and the specific arrangement of the figure, which prioritises readability for the artisan who would eventually assemble the collage. The composition is balanced, with the long, flowing hair and the patterned kimono providing a sense of movement despite the static nature of the print.
The colour palette relies on muted tones, typical of the late eighteenth-century woodblock printing process. The use of soft greens, pale reds, and cream backgrounds creates a harmonious visual effect. Shun'ei employs a calligraphic line quality to define the folds of the fabric and the individual strands of hair, demonstrating his technical skill in woodblock carving and design. The figure is presented against a plain background, ensuring the focus remains on the costume and the performative gesture. This work offers a glimpse into the intersection of fine art printmaking and domestic craft in Edo-period Japan, where theatrical imagery was adapted for personal creative projects within the home.
