A classic ukiyo-e landscape by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting the Sagami coast. The print features Mount Fuji and Enoshima island viewed from the hills of Shichirigahama.
Utagawa Hiroshige produced this woodblock print as part of his series Famous Places in Our Country. The composition depicts Shichirigahama, a stretch of coastline in Sagami Province known for its views of Enoshima and Mount Fuji. Hiroshige uses a high vantage point from the surrounding hills to frame the bay. In the foreground, steep green slopes descend toward the shore, where small figures travel along the sand. A large wave breaks near the beach, its crest rendered with fine white lines to suggest foam. The middle ground features the wooded island of Enoshima, situated amidst the blue waters of the Pacific. Beyond the island, the snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji appears on the horizon. The sky transitions from a pale cream to a deep orange at the top edge, a result of the bokashi technique where ink is hand-applied to the woodblock to create a gradient. This atmospheric effect suggests either dawn or dusk. The use of negative space in the sky and water creates a sense of openness typical of Japanese spatial logic. Hiroshige was a master of the landscape genre within the ukiyo-e tradition. His work often focused on the seasonal and weather-related changes of specific Japanese locations. In this print, the use of Prussian blue ink provides a deep tone for the sea, contrasting with the earthy greens and browns of the land. The inclusion of travellers on the beach adds a human element to the natural scene, a common characteristic of Edo period prints. This specific series was published by Wataya Kihei and demonstrates Hiroshige's ability to balance complex geographical features within a single frame. The artist employs sharp diagonal lines in the hills to lead the eye toward the distant mountain, creating a structured path through the coastal environment.
