A delicate ink and colour painting on silk by Nagasawa Roshū, depicting the Seven Gods of Good Fortune in a relaxed, informal gathering.
Nagasawa Roshū, a student of the celebrated Maruyama Ōkyo, produced this depiction of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune (Shichifukujin) on silk. The composition gathers the deities in a relaxed, informal setting, departing from more rigid iconographic traditions. Each figure is rendered with the characteristic fluidity of the Maruyama school, which prioritised observation and a softer approach to line work.
The group includes Bishamonten, identifiable by his armour and helmet, seated prominently at the top. Below him, the other deities are arranged in a conversational cluster. Hotei, the god of contentment, is shown with his characteristic corpulence, while Benzaiten, the goddess of music and arts, sits gracefully to the right. The inclusion of a deer and a tortoise adds symbolic weight, as these animals represent longevity and wisdom within Japanese folklore. The colour palette remains muted, relying on soft washes of pigment that complement the aged tone of the silk support.
Roshū demonstrates a mastery of brush control, using thin, precise lines to define facial expressions and the folds of garments. The arrangement of the figures creates a sense of intimacy, as if the viewer has happened upon a private gathering of these auspicious beings. The work reflects the cultural interest in the Seven Gods during the Edo period, where they were frequently depicted in art and literature as bringers of prosperity and happiness. This print captures the technical refinement of the late Edo period, offering a glimpse into the stylistic transition between traditional ink painting and the more naturalistic approaches that gained popularity in Kyoto during the early nineteenth century.
