Description
A golden pheasant sits among snow-covered branches in Ito Jakuchu's 'Settyu kinkeizu'. The detailed brushwork and contrasting colours create a striking composition.
Ito Jakuchu (1716-1800) was a Japanese painter of the mid-Edo period, known for his detailed and unconventional depictions of birds and flowers. He broke from traditional styles, developing his own unique approach that blended realism with decorative design. Jakuchu's work often features a playful use of perspective and a meticulous attention to detail. His subjects range from chickens and other fowl to more exotic birds and lush botanical arrangements. He produced many works for temples and private patrons, establishing himself as one of the most original artists of his time. 'Settyu kinkeizu' depicts a golden pheasant perched among snow-laden branches. The composition is dense, with the bird surrounded by pine needles and camellia blossoms dusted with snow. The pheasant, rendered in bright colours, stands out against the muted greens and whites of the background. Jakuchu's fine brushwork is evident in the detailed rendering of the bird's feathers and the delicate petals of the flowers. The falling snow is suggested by small, carefully placed dots of white, creating a sense of depth and atmosphere.
