Serrières - Albert Gleizes

A geometric exploration of the French village of Serrières, rendered in the distinctive, multi-perspective style of early twentieth-century Cubism.

Albert Gleizes produced this work during a period of intense experimentation with the formal language of Cubism. The painting depicts the village of Serrières, located in the Ardèche region of France. Rather than capturing the scene through traditional perspective, Gleizes breaks the architecture and surrounding terrain into a series of interlocking geometric planes. The composition relies on a restricted tonal range, which allows the viewer to focus on the structural arrangement of the forms rather than local colour.

In this work, the artist employs a method of flattening the pictorial space, where the distinction between the foreground and the background becomes ambiguous. The buildings are reduced to simplified blocks, while the surrounding hills are suggested through angular shapes and rhythmic patterns. The inclusion of stippled textures provides a contrast to the solid, flat areas of paint, adding a sense of movement to the otherwise static arrangement. This approach reflects the broader Cubist interest in representing the subject from multiple viewpoints simultaneously, effectively deconstructing the visual experience of the village.

As a founding member of the Section d'Or group, Gleizes was deeply concerned with the mathematical and rhythmic properties of painting. This piece demonstrates his move away from the more analytical, monochromatic phase of early Cubism toward a more decorative and rhythmic organisation of the canvas. The work avoids unnecessary detail, opting instead for a synthesis of form that prioritises the internal logic of the image. By stripping away the descriptive elements of the scene, Gleizes invites the viewer to engage with the painting as an autonomous construction of shape and light. It remains a clear example of the artist's ability to translate the physical world into a rigorous, abstract vocabulary.
