This abstract composition by Hilma af Klint features geometric shapes and a muted palette, reflecting her interest in spiritualism and theosophy. The work invites contemplation of the symbolic meanings within its simple forms.
Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) was a Swedish artist and mystic whose paintings are considered among the first abstract works in Western art history. She produced a body of work that predates the more widely recognised abstract compositions of artists such as Kandinsky and Mondrian. Af Klint believed that she was acting as a medium, channeling higher spiritual forces to create her art. Her paintings often incorporate geometric shapes, symbols, and text, reflecting her interest in spiritualism, theosophy, and anthroposophy. 'Series No. VII, No. 3f' presents a composition of geometric forms arranged vertically on a pale ground. At the top, a circle is divided into quadrants of grey, gold, yellow, and blue, with a small crescent shape within the blue section. Below, a dark, elliptical shape with a lighter interior suggests a disc or lens. At the bottom, a square is similarly divided into quadrants of blue, yellow, orange, and red, enclosed within a dotted circle. The work's simple forms and muted palette create a contemplative mood, inviting viewers to consider the symbolic meanings embedded within the composition.
