A modernist still life by Prudence Heward, capturing the textures and earthy tones of autumn through gestural brushwork and a focus on seasonal harvest.
Prudence Heward, a member of the Beaver Hall Group, is recognised for her direct approach to painting and her ability to capture the physical weight of her subjects. In this still life, titled September, the artist employs a robust application of paint to depict the seasonal transition of late summer into autumn. The composition centres on a small collection of fruit, specifically a peach and two dark plums, resting against a backdrop of foliage.
Heward uses a palette dominated by deep forest greens, ochre, and earthy browns, which effectively communicate the cooling temperatures of the month. The brushwork is gestural and confident, prioritising the tactile quality of the oil medium over precise, photographic detail. The ferns and leaves are rendered with sweeping strokes that create a sense of movement, contrasting with the static, rounded forms of the fruit.
This work reflects the broader Canadian modernist interest in the natural world, moving away from the academic traditions of the early twentieth century. Heward avoids unnecessary ornamentation, focusing instead on the interplay of light and shadow across the surfaces of the objects. The signature 'P.H.' in the lower right corner confirms her authorship, consistent with her practice of signing smaller works or studies. The painting provides a clear example of her ability to imbue a modest subject with a sense of gravity and presence. By stripping back the composition to its essential elements, Heward invites the viewer to observe the textures and colours of the harvest season without distraction. The work remains a representative piece of her mid-career output, demonstrating her technical control and her preference for earthy, grounded colour schemes.
