An architectural etching by Giuseppe Vasi depicting the ancient Roman Mausoleum of the Plautii near Tivoli, rendered with precise detail.
This etching by Giuseppe Vasi depicts the Mausoleum of the Plautii, a prominent Roman tomb situated along the Via Tiburtina near Tivoli. Vasi, a Sicilian artist who spent his career in Rome, produced extensive documentation of the city and its surrounding antiquities. His work is characterised by a precise, analytical approach to architectural form, capturing the structural integrity of the ancient site with clarity.
The composition focuses on the cylindrical tomb, which bears the distinct masonry of the Roman period. Vasi employs fine cross-hatching to define the texture of the stone and the play of light across the curved surface. The inclusion of small figures in the foreground provides a sense of scale, contrasting the human presence with the monumental nature of the ancient structure. The surrounding environment, featuring sparse vegetation and distant hills, is rendered with a restrained hand, ensuring the tomb remains the primary subject.
As a practitioner of the veduta tradition, Vasi sought to record the physical reality of historical sites. His prints were often collected by travellers on the Grand Tour, serving as souvenirs of their visits to the Italian countryside. This particular work demonstrates his technical proficiency in etching, particularly in his ability to convey depth and volume through line work alone. The print reflects the eighteenth-century interest in classical archaeology and the preservation of Roman history through visual media. The paper retains the character of the original plate, showing the subtle tonal variations typical of mid-eighteenth-century printing techniques.
