A 1597 engraving by Theodor de Bry, featuring a self-portrait with memento mori symbols including a skull and a pair of dividers.
This engraving from 1597 depicts the Flemish engraver and publisher Theodor de Bry at the age of sixty-nine. The composition follows the conventions of the period, presenting the subject within an oval frame inscribed with his name and age. De Bry is shown in a fur-trimmed garment, his gaze directed toward the viewer with a sense of gravity.
In his hands, he holds a pair of dividers and rests one hand upon a human skull. These objects function as memento mori, symbols of mortality and the passage of time, which were common in European portraiture of the late sixteenth century. The inclusion of the dividers suggests his profession as a master of geometry and engraving, linking his intellectual pursuits with the inevitability of death. The Latin inscription on the table surface, 'Domine doce me ita reliquos vitae meae dies transigere ut in vera pietate vitam et moriar', translates to a prayer for guidance in living the remainder of his days in true piety.
The technical execution demonstrates the precision characteristic of De Bry's workshop. The use of cross-hatching and varied line weights creates a sense of volume in the fur collar and the contours of the face. The background consists of fine, horizontal lines that provide a neutral field, ensuring the focus remains on the figure. This work provides insight into the self-conception of an artist who was instrumental in the dissemination of visual information across Europe through his extensive publishing activities. The print is a clear example of the Northern Renaissance interest in combining technical mastery with philosophical reflection on the human condition.
