Richard Gerstl (1883-1908) was an Austrian painter known for his intense, emotionally charged Expressionist works. Though his career was brief, ending with his suicide at the age of 25, Gerstl produced a body of work that stands apart from his contemporaries due to its raw psychological insight and innovative approach to colour and form. He is considered one of Austria's first Expressionists. This self-portrait presents the artist nude, standing in a somewhat ambiguous space. The palette is restrained, dominated by cool blues, greys, and whites, with touches of warmer flesh tones. Gerstl's brushwork is vigorous and expressive, with visible strokes that convey a sense of immediacy and emotional urgency. The figure is rendered with a degree of anatomical accuracy, but Gerstl is less concerned with idealised beauty than with capturing the inner state of the subject.
