A distorted, Cubist-influenced self-portrait by Man Ray, the painting presents the artist holding a camera, with a nude figure in the background. The work reflects the artist's involvement with Surrealism and his exploration of identity.
Man Ray, born Emmanuel Radnitzky in Philadelphia, was a central figure in both the Dada and Surrealist movements. He worked in a variety of media, but is perhaps best known for his photography. This 1941 self-portrait is an oil on canvas, and it presents a distorted, almost Cubist-influenced, depiction of the artist holding a camera. The painting is composed of simplified forms and a muted palette. Ray's face is elongated and angular, with a strong emphasis on geometric shapes. He is dressed in black, which contrasts with the lighter tones of his skin and the background. To the left, a nude figure stands in a white frame, possibly a reference to his photographic work and the objectification of the human form. The overall effect is one of introspection and a questioning of identity, typical of Surrealist art.
