A detailed 1530 self-portrait engraving by German artist Heinrich Aldegrever, showcasing the precise linear technique of the Northern Renaissance.
This engraving by Heinrich Aldegrever, dated 1530, presents a formal self-portrait of the artist at the age of twenty-eight. Aldegrever, a member of the group known as the Little Masters, was active in Westphalia and heavily influenced by the technical precision of Albrecht Dürer. The composition follows the conventions of sixteenth-century portraiture, featuring the artist in a three-quarter view, wearing a soft cap and a tunic with a ruffled collar.
The work displays the characteristic linear control of a master engraver. Fine, parallel hatching defines the contours of the face and the folds of the fabric, creating a sense of volume within a restricted tonal range. The artist includes his monogram, AG, on a tablet to the right, a common practice among printmakers of the period to assert authorship and professional identity. The Latin inscription at the top identifies the subject and his age, while the date is clearly marked at the base.
As a self-portrait, the image functions as a record of the artist's appearance and his technical proficiency. The gaze is directed slightly away from the viewer, conveying a sense of detached observation. The background is composed of horizontal lines, which serves to isolate the figure and focus attention on the facial features and the texture of the clothing. This print provides a clear example of the small-scale, highly detailed work that defined the output of the German Little Masters during the early sixteenth century. It remains a primary source for understanding the self-perception of artists during this period of European history.
