A refined 1804 self-portrait by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, capturing the artist at twenty-four with characteristic Neoclassical precision and clarity.
This self-portrait, executed by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres in 1804, captures the artist at the beginning of his career. At the time of its creation, Ingres was twenty-four years old and living in Paris. The composition presents the artist in a three-quarter view, positioned before an easel. He holds a cloth in his right hand, appearing to erase or adjust a sketch on the canvas, while his left hand grips a drawing tool.
The painting demonstrates the technical precision that became a hallmark of Ingres's career. His gaze is directed toward the viewer with a steady, composed expression. The lighting is focused, illuminating his face and the white collar of his shirt against a dark, muted background. This contrast draws attention to the features of the young artist, rendered with smooth brushwork and a clear sense of form.
Ingres was a student of Jacques-Louis David, and this work reflects the discipline of the Neoclassical tradition. The emphasis on line and structural clarity is evident in the rendering of the figure. Unlike the more emotive styles that would emerge later in the nineteenth century, this portrait maintains a sense of restraint and order. The palette is restricted to dark tones, which serves to isolate the subject and provide a sense of gravity. This image provides a record of the artist's appearance during his formative years, before he departed for Rome. It remains a clear example of his early mastery of portraiture and his adherence to the academic standards of his training.
