Description
A serene woodblock print by Hasui Kawase depicting the artist standing on the veranda of Kiyomizu-dera temple in Kyoto at night.
Hasui Kawase, a central figure in the Shin-hanga movement, produced this woodblock print in 1933. The composition depicts the wooden veranda of the Kiyomizu-dera temple in Kyoto under a clear night sky. A solitary figure, representing the artist himself, stands near the railing, observing the city lights below. The work demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of the Watanabe Shozaburo publishing house, which collaborated with Kawase to revive traditional ukiyo-e methods for a modern audience. The print relies on a restricted palette of deep blues and cool greys to convey the stillness of the evening. The architectural elements of the temple are rendered with clean, sharp lines, while the texture of the wooden floorboards is suggested through subtle gradations of colour. The contrast between the dark, shadowed structure and the soft glow emanating from the temple interior creates a sense of spatial depth. Unlike the flat perspective of traditional Edo-period prints, this work incorporates Western-influenced shading and atmospheric effects to capture the specific quality of light at night. Kawase travelled extensively throughout Japan to sketch locations for his prints. His focus on quiet, often melancholic scenes of rural and urban life provided a counterpoint to the rapid industrialisation occurring in Japan during the early twentieth century. This print is a representative example of his ability to imbue architectural subjects with a personal, contemplative mood. The inclusion of the artist as a small, contemplative figure within the vast temple complex invites the viewer to share in his quiet observation of the historic site.
