A detailed woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting the early morning bustle at Seki station. This scene from the Tōkaidō series captures travellers and attendants preparing for departure under a pre-dawn sky.
This woodblock print depicts Seki, the forty-eighth station on the Tōkaidō road, during the pre-dawn hours. It is part of the Hoeidō edition, the series that established Hiroshige as a leading figure in the ukiyo-e genre. The scene focuses on the activity at a high-ranking inn, known as a honjin, as travellers prepare for their journey toward Kyoto. The composition is defined by large white curtains, or maku, decorated with the circular crest of the publisher, Hoeidō. These curtains screen the interior of the inn from the road. To the left, attendants pack luggage and adjust straw sandals. A man holds a lantern, its red glow providing a point of contrast against the cool tones of the early morning. In the centre, other figures move about the courtyard, suggesting the routine of a departure. The dark sky at the top of the frame indicates that the sun has not yet risen, a technique Hiroshige used to explore light and shadow. Hiroshige used a palette of indigo, ochre, and grey to convey the atmosphere of the fading night. The vertical lines of the bamboo poles and the dark silhouette of the tree on the right provide a structural balance to the horizontal movement of the figures. This print captures a specific moment of transition, focusing on the mundane tasks of travel. It reflects the social customs of the Edo period, where the Tōkaidō served as the primary artery for trade and pilgrimage between Edo and Kyoto.
