Description
A woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting the early morning departure of a feudal lord's procession at Seki station. Part of the Kyōka Tōkaidō series.
Utagawa Hiroshige produced several series documenting the Tōkaidō road, the coastal route connecting Edo to Kyoto. This specific print belongs to the Kyōka Tōkaidō set, published between 1839 and 1842. The series takes its name from the kyōka, or humorous poems, included in the composition. This edition is smaller than the earlier Hoeidō version but maintains the artist's focus on the daily activities of travellers.
The scene depicts Seki, the forty-seventh station on the route. It captures the early morning preparations for the departure of a daimyo, a feudal lord. Attendants and porters are shown in various states of readiness. Some figures bow low to the ground as the procession prepares to move. The composition uses a diagonal roofline to create a sense of space within the station courtyard. Blue curtains decorated with geometric crests hang from the eaves, providing a strong structural element to the upper half of the print.
Hiroshige uses a palette dominated by greens and blues. The flat application of colour is typical of the woodblock medium. The figures are rendered with economical lines, capturing posture and movement without excessive detail. This print provides a record of the rigid social hierarchies and logistical complexities of travel in Edo-period Japan. The inclusion of the poem adds a literary dimension to the visual narrative, a common feature in ukiyo-e prints intended for a literate urban audience.
