A fine art print of a page from the Dream Diary (Yume no ki) by the Japanese monk Myōe Kōben, featuring expressive ink calligraphy from the Kamakura period.
This piece is a fragment of the Yume no ki, or Dream Diary, authored by the monk Myōe Kōben. Myōe was a prominent figure of the Kegon school of Buddhism during the Kamakura period in Japan. He resided at Kōzan-ji temple, where he maintained a practice of recording his dreams and visions over several decades. These records provide a window into the internal life of a medieval Japanese cleric, documenting his spiritual experiences, anxieties, and religious aspirations.
The calligraphy displays the fluid, expressive brushwork characteristic of the era. The characters are arranged in vertical columns, following traditional Japanese writing conventions. The ink varies in density, reflecting the speed and pressure of the brush as it moved across the paper. The text is not merely a functional record, but an extension of Myōe's meditative practice. The physical presence of the ink on the paper captures the immediate, personal nature of his spiritual journey.
As a historical document, the Yume no ki is valued for its raw, unedited quality. Unlike formal religious treatises, these entries were private reflections. The script shows a degree of informality, suggesting the urgency with which the monk captured his nocturnal experiences upon waking. The paper itself, aged over centuries, provides a neutral background that allows the dark, rhythmic strokes of the ink to dominate the visual field. This print preserves the texture and tonal variations of the original manuscript, offering an authentic representation of this rare historical artefact.
