Description
A Post-Impressionist study by Paul Sérusier, featuring simplified forms and a distinct palette typical of the Nabis movement.
Paul Sérusier, a central figure in the Nabis group, produced this work during his time in Brittany. The painting reflects the influence of Paul Gauguin, who encouraged Sérusier to move away from literal representation towards a more subjective use of colour and form. The composition is structured around simplified, flat planes of colour that define the coastal terrain.
The figure of the seaweed gatherer is reduced to a basic shape, integrated into the foreground. The large, rounded forms in the middle ground, which resemble haystacks or dunes, are rendered in warm, earthy tones that contrast with the cooler blues and greys of the water and the figure. Sérusier employs a synthetic approach, where the scene is constructed from memory and artistic intuition rather than direct observation of light and shadow.
This piece demonstrates the Nabis interest in decorative qualities and the rejection of traditional perspective. The brushwork is visible but controlled, contributing to the overall sense of a flattened, two-dimensional surface. By prioritising the arrangement of shapes and the harmony of the palette, Sérusier creates a scene that feels removed from a specific moment in time. The work captures the quiet, repetitive nature of rural labour in the Breton region, filtered through the lens of late nineteenth-century avant-garde theory. It remains a clear example of the shift towards abstraction that defined the work of the Nabis during this period.
