A detailed etching with watercolour by Cornelis Dusart, depicting a man relaxing in a tavern with a pipe and a jug.
Cornelis Dusart, a pupil of Adriaen van Ostade, specialised in the depiction of peasant life within the Dutch Republic. This work captures a quiet, domestic moment, showing a man seated in a tavern setting. He holds a clay pipe in one hand while using his hat to fan himself, suggesting the warmth of the room or the lingering heat of a summer day. The composition is typical of the period, focusing on the mundane activities of the lower classes with a sense of observational realism.
The artist employs a combination of etching and delicate watercolour washes to define the scene. The figure is positioned against a wooden partition, upon which a small print of an elephant is pinned, a detail that adds a layer of curiosity to the otherwise humble surroundings. A stoneware jug and a glass of liquid rest on a barrel to the left, further establishing the tavern environment. The man's expression is one of relaxed exhaustion, his eyes half-closed as he enjoys his smoke.
Dusart's work often explored the character of his subjects through subtle gestures and posture. The muted colour palette, dominated by earthy tones and soft greys, reflects the atmospheric quality of the interior. The use of line is precise, characteristic of his printmaking technique, which allows for the rendering of textures such as the rough wood of the chair and the fabric of the man's apron. This piece offers a glimpse into the social habits of the late seventeenth century, documenting the everyday life of the Dutch populace without idealisation. The inclusion of the artist's signature on the small print pinned to the wall serves as a clever, self-referential mark within the composition.
