A fine academic study of a male nude in black and white chalk on blue paper by the Dutch artist Jean Grandjean.
This academic study by Jean Grandjean demonstrates the rigorous training typical of late eighteenth-century European art education. Executed in black and white chalk on blue paper, the work captures a male figure in a relaxed yet structured pose. The artist employs the blue paper as a mid-tone, allowing the white chalk to define the highlights on the musculature and the black chalk to establish the shadows and contours of the form.
Grandjean focuses on the anatomical accuracy of the seated figure. The man leans against a stone surface, his body angled towards the viewer. The surrounding foliage is rendered with looser, more gestural strokes, which contrast with the precise modelling of the human form. This technique directs the viewer's attention to the figure, which is the primary subject of the composition. The use of chalk on coloured paper was a standard practice for artists of this period, providing a method to achieve a three-dimensional effect through tonal variation.
Jean Grandjean was a Dutch artist who spent time in Rome, where he engaged with the classical traditions that defined the era. His drawings often reflect the influence of the antique and the emphasis on drawing from the live model. This particular study shows his technical proficiency in handling light and shadow to create volume. The work remains a clear example of the preparatory drawings produced by artists during their formative years, intended to refine their understanding of human anatomy and composition before moving on to larger, more complex paintings. The signature of the artist is visible in the lower right corner, confirming the provenance of this piece as a genuine study from his hand.
