A detailed maritime drawing by Wigerus Vitringa, featuring sailing vessels on choppy waters rendered in pen, ink, and grey wash.
This work by Wigerus Vitringa captures the maritime atmosphere characteristic of the Dutch Golden Age. Vitringa, a lawyer by profession who turned to painting and drawing later in life, focused his artistic output on marine subjects. His style shows the influence of Ludolf Bakhuizen, particularly in the treatment of turbulent water and the precise rendering of rigging on sailing vessels.
The composition features a central sailing boat navigating choppy waters, with a larger ship visible in the distance to the left. The artist employs a monochromatic palette, using pen and brown ink to define the structural details of the hulls and masts, while grey wash provides volume to the clouds and depth to the sea. The waves are depicted with rhythmic, swirling lines that suggest movement and the force of the wind. The sky is filled with voluminous clouds, a common motif in Dutch marine art, which helps to establish the scale of the vessels against the horizon.
Vitringa's approach to this drawing demonstrates a technical proficiency in handling ink and wash. The contrast between the dark, defined lines of the boats and the softer, atmospheric application of the wash creates a sense of spatial recession. This piece reflects the period's fascination with the sea, which was central to Dutch economic and cultural life during the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. The work remains a clear example of the draughtsmanship typical of the era, prioritising clarity of form and the observation of nautical detail.
