Description
Morris Louis's 'Seal' is an abstract expressionist painting featuring translucent washes of colour that flow and blend across the canvas, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow.
Morris Louis (1912-1962) was an American painter and a major figure in the Color Field movement. He, along with Kenneth Noland, was inspired by Helen Frankenthaler's soak-stain technique, in which thinned paint is poured onto unprimed canvas, allowing the colours to merge and stain the fabric directly. This method became a hallmark of Color Field painting, emphasising the flatness of the picture plane and the properties of the paint itself. 'Seal' exemplifies Louis's mature style. The composition features translucent washes of colour that flow and blend across the canvas. The artist manipulated the acrylic paint to create veils of colour, achieving a sense of depth and luminosity. The colours range from deep blues and purples to softer greens and whites, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow. The absence of defined forms or representational imagery encourages viewers to engage with the artwork on a purely visual and emotional level.
