Description
Seaham’s harbour entrance is shown from above, with the curved sea wall enclosing calm water beside the open Durham coast, with the foreground shore, open water and distant land all kept in view.
A stone breakwater arcs around the harbour, ending near a small lighthouse at its outer point. The enclosed water sits inside the curve, while the darker sea extends beyond it. Reeds and grasses edge the lower foreground, and pale clouds stretch over the distant shoreline.
The harbour wall gives Seaham a clear relationship with the North Sea, protecting the water within while facing the open coast. From this raised viewpoint, the curve of the breakwater and the small light at its end shape the whole scene. The changing shapes of the shore and the clear separation between near ground and distance remain visible throughout the scene.
