A refined woodblock print by Ohara Koson featuring a sea eagle perched on a branch, executed in the traditional kacho-ga style with subtle atmospheric tones.
This woodblock print by Ohara Koson depicts a sea eagle perched upon a gnarled branch. Koson was a master of the kacho-ga genre, which focuses on birds and flowers. His work reflects the aesthetic principles of the Shin-hanga movement, which sought to revitalise traditional Japanese printmaking by incorporating Western techniques of light, shadow, and atmospheric perspective.
The composition is defined by the contrast between the eagle and the muted, misty background. The bird is rendered with careful attention to the texture of its feathers, using subtle gradations of grey and brown ink. The yellow of the beak provides a singular point of colour, drawing the eye to the eagle's alert expression. The branch, executed with bold, calligraphic brushwork, curves across the lower portion of the frame, providing a sense of weight and grounding to the image.
Koson produced many such studies during his career, often working with the publisher Matsuki Heikichi. These prints were intended for both domestic and international audiences, appealing to a growing interest in Japanese nature studies. The wood grain visible in the background is a characteristic feature of the printing process, adding a tactile quality to the paper surface. The print avoids unnecessary ornamentation, allowing the subject to occupy the space with quiet authority. It is a representative example of the technical precision and observational skill that defined Koson's output during the early twentieth century.
