A graphite sketch by Johan Daniël Koelman featuring a study of a fishing boat alongside two detailed portrait profiles of men.
This graphite study by the Dutch artist Johan Daniël Koelman captures a moment of observational practice. The composition is divided into two distinct sections: a small, lightly rendered fishing boat at the top and two detailed portrait studies of men below. Koelman, active during the nineteenth century, often focused on the character of the Dutch populace and maritime life. His approach to drawing here is direct and unadorned, prioritising the capture of form and expression over finished polish.
The upper portion of the sheet shows a boat with figures, rendered with minimal strokes to suggest movement and the presence of the vessel on water. Below, the artist shifts his attention to the human face. The two profiles are drawn with a clear sense of anatomy and individual character. The figure on the left wears a simple cap, while the figure on the right is depicted in a wide-brimmed hat, his hair tied back. The lines are economical, showing the artist's ability to define facial structure and shadow with few marks.
Such sketches provide insight into the working methods of nineteenth-century artists. They were often produced as preparatory material for larger compositions or as exercises in capturing the likeness of local subjects. The paper retains the texture of a working sketch, with the graphite marks remaining crisp and clear. This piece offers a glimpse into the daily life of the Dutch coast, filtered through the lens of a draughtsman interested in the specific features of his contemporaries. It is a quiet, authentic record of observation, free from the artifice of formal portraiture or staged maritime scenes.
