A refined Rinpa-style painting depicting a narrative encounter from the Tales of Ise, presented in a traditional fan-shaped format.
This work by Fukae Roshū depicts a specific episode from the Tales of Ise, a tenth-century collection of Japanese waka poems and associated narratives. The scene captures the encounter at Mount Utsu, where a traveller meets a monk on a narrow, overgrown path. The composition is formatted as a fan shape, a common practice in Edo-period decorative arts, which requires the artist to balance the figures against the curved boundaries of the paper.
Roshū, a student of Ogata Kōrin, employs the characteristic Rinpa style here. The figures are rendered with clean, precise lines, while the surrounding environment is suggested through simplified, atmospheric forms. The muted colour palette, dominated by earthy tones and soft greens, reflects the aesthetic preferences of the period, where natural motifs were often integrated into literary subjects. The monk, carrying a staff and wearing a straw hat, stands in contrast to the courtier, whose attire is detailed with subtle patterns.
The painting avoids excessive detail, focusing instead on the narrative tension of the meeting. The trees and foliage are treated as decorative elements, framing the central interaction without overwhelming the composition. This approach is typical of the Rinpa school, which sought to combine classical literary themes with a refined, graphic sensibility. The work demonstrates the artist's ability to adapt traditional subject matter into a portable, functional format, suitable for both display and practical use. By isolating this moment from the broader text, Roshū invites the viewer to contemplate the isolation and transient nature of the encounter, themes central to the original literary source.
