This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunei depicts the kabuki actor Sawamura Sojuro III in the role of Enya Hangan, a character from the classic play Kanadehon Chushingura. Shunei, a student of Katsukawa Shunsho, became known for his yakusha-e, or actor prints, which often focused on the physical presence and individual characteristics of the performer rather than purely idealised beauty.
The composition is spare, placing the actor against a neutral background to direct attention to his posture and expression. The figure wears the formal kamishimo, a costume consisting of a kataginu vest with exaggerated shoulders and wide hakama trousers. The lines are clean and deliberate, defining the folds of the fabric and the actor's features with precision. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted earth tones and subtle patterns within the fabric to create visual interest without overwhelming the subject.
In the context of the Edo period, such prints functioned as promotional material for the theatre, allowing fans to collect images of their favourite actors. Shunei's approach to portraiture often captured a sense of gravity, as seen here in the actor's steady gaze and composed stance. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers who worked alongside the artist to produce these works. By focusing on the actor's identity, the print offers a glimpse into the theatrical culture of late eighteenth-century Japan.
