A detailed 1533 engraving by Heinrich Aldegrever depicting the Roman deity Saturn with his traditional attributes of a scythe and a ram.
This engraving by Heinrich Aldegrever, dated 1533, depicts the Roman deity Saturn. As one of the 'Little Masters' of the German Renaissance, Aldegrever demonstrates his technical precision through the fine, controlled lines characteristic of the period. The composition follows the traditional iconography of the god, who is shown with his scythe, a symbol of time and harvest. He stands over a ram, an animal associated with his astrological influence, while holding one of his children aloft. The background features a fortified castle, a common motif in Northern European prints of the sixteenth century, which provides a sense of scale and narrative depth.
Aldegrever was heavily influenced by the work of Albrecht Dürer, and this print reflects that stylistic lineage through its anatomical focus and cross-hatched shading. The musculature of the figure is rendered with care, showing the artist's interest in the human form. The inclusion of the date and the name 'SATVRNVS' in the upper tablet is typical of the period's printmaking, where such details were integrated into the design. The work is a clear example of the small-scale, highly detailed engravings that were popular among collectors and humanists of the time. It offers a glimpse into the sixteenth-century fascination with classical mythology, reinterpreted through a Northern European lens. The print remains a study in the balance between mythological narrative and the rigorous discipline of the engraver's burin.
